Why do we need a Tibetan Heritage Center?

More than 500 Tibetans now call greater Boston our home. In 1959 Tibet was occupied by Communist China and His Holiness the Dalai Lama along with 80,000 fled and live as refugees in India, Nepal and Bhutan. With our rich ancient Tibetan civilization under threat and fear of losing our identity, we are eager to protect and flourish our culture in the Greater Boston area: our new homeland. A Tibetan Heritage Center in or near Boston will provide a place where our multi-generational community can share and bequeath our unique and important traditions and heritage to our children. Such a Center will strengthen the commitment of Boston’s many friends of Tibet and reach out to other members of the broader community who have yet to learn about Tibetan culture and history.

Where do we stand now?

At this time the Tibetan Association of Boston is reviewing possible sites for constructing a new facility or extensively renovating an existing building. Current estimates suggest that the project, whichever choice we may, may cost around one millions dollar. The likeliest approach will be to start with a basic structure and expand as use and resources allow. We will seek funding from a variety of sources, including individuals who appreciate the richness of Tibetan civilization and mourn the cultural devastation caused by the Communist takeover of our small but proud land.

Our Challenge

With adequate financial resources, the Tibetan Association of Boston plans to purchase or convert an existing space into a large, multi purpose community hall able to accommodate around 500 people. The building would have a shrine room, arranged in the traditional Tibetan Style, a library that will be a sophisticated resource of information about Tibetan culture, history, medicine, religion, politics, language and literature in the Boston area and ideally two classrooms. In addition, the building will need support spaces such as office space, restroom and a kitchen.

Our aspirations are clear and we are learning about the potential opportunities and range of costs for our Tibetan Heritage Center. And we are studying our capacity to raise funds with our community and beyond.
